THE STORY OF MR. JAROSLAV STRACHAN,

who operates popular accommodation, dining, sports and recreational facilities in the distinctive village of Ždiar beneath the Tatras.

Jaroslav Strachan, originally a Ruthenian from the small village of Jakubany near Stará Ľubovňa, did not have easy beginnings in business at all. After arriving in Ždiar, he found himself in an unfamiliar environment, among local Gorals with a different mindset and character. Together with his wife, he built his first guesthouse and, through a serious approach, gradually earned the trust of local residents and visitors. From the beginning, he focused on providing high-quality and affordable services, while also emphasizing service innovation that would set him apart from the competition.

A small ski lift was soon added to the guesthouse, and over the years it grew into an attractive ski resort. Today, in addition to Wellness Penzión Strachan*** and the ski resort, he also owns and operates the four-star Hotel Bachledka Strachan and the large Medvedí brloh Strachan restaurant directly on the ski slope. We also cannot forget the additional sports service facilities, such as a ski equipment rental, ski school, ski shop and souvenir sales. In the summer months, he operates the largest e-bike rental, a family park with a small animal farm, adventure minigolf and this year’s new feature: stunning wooden tree houses. If you have grown tired of hotels and guesthouses, you can stay at Chalet Strachan on the edge of the forest, with what is surely one of the most amazing views of the Belianske Tatras.

THE KEY TO SUCCESS?

One of the key factors of success, according to Mr. Strachan, is quality staff, which he has managed to attract to his facilities. He fights employee turnover through exemplary care for his workers, daily contact and communication with them. Since taking care of employee satisfaction also includes their comfort in private life and rest during free time, he built fully equipped employee apartments for them. In addition, every employee is entitled to use additional sports services.

Also significant is Strachan’s contribution to the local community of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in tourism services. He encourages them to cooperate on joint projects with the aim of increasing the quality and complexity of services, so they can become a viable counterbalance to the facilities of large developers. He does not see competition as a threat, but quite the opposite, as a positive element and a source of inspiration.
